My Deconstruction Story, Part 6
I've tried writing the rest of this a couple of times, but it just gets messy. So let me step away from my deconstruction story for a moment and shine a light on the ugliness and brokenness of Rwanda. It is a key element in my journey, but one that cannot be explained easily or handled lightly.
Before continuing, please take time (and it will require some time) to get more familiar with what happened in a faraway place a long time ago to people whose names you will never know...
First, watch this PBS documentary. It is long (over two hours) and brutal to watch (it includes actual footage and images from the streets of Rwanda), but so important for perspective and understanding.
I also strongly encourage you learn about Carl Wilkens and watch Beautifully Broken (fair warning - it is a 2-hour long commercial for WorldVision's sponsorship program, but the story it tells is so powerful, you don't want to miss it). It will help lay a foundation for the rest of what I share.
It is easy, in our (mostly) comfortable developed-world, American context to forget that not everyone lives like we do, not everyone believes like we do, and not everyone defines right and wrong the way we do. I guess, in a way, beginning to recognize that reality (with its mind-blowing implications) is really what the rest of my "deconstruction" story is all about. Hopefully you'll continue this journey with me.
